deer

side of the road
life, dear
where it lies in
silence
and the steel animals
continue to roam
and be
master predators
of an old territory

life, dear

our discarded wild
hay
growing
wasted like a weed
our old
flowers on the
kitchen table
our medicine
for a
quick healing
simple without worry
of
growing immune

we hold this life, dear

constantly running and worrying
moving without
being ourselves
just
grazing in a field
looking
out a window
passing the
scenery
and forgetting to be
our own
children
lost on a day
dream

and caught
in a
day dream
unable
grow up and
become
our parents

life dear,

we change the rules
but
the rules can’t
be changed
history
is a marker
a game
to be improved upon
but not
to be rewritten

dear life, dear

this busy
lifeless
road
sleeping on the
side
lines
