Return of a Dick – Remembrance Day

-It was a small room
stuffy
sweaty- sweatier than a locker room.
he had been in there for about
an hour before i came in.
it had been another 45 minutes of
just talking, trying to
get him to realize i could see his point of view
on other matters.
he wasn’t a suspect in my latest investigation
but,
he knew something.
and
i needed him to open up and trust me.
i needed him to tell me what he knew
and that i wasn’t judging him.
but first,
i would have to get him talking about
other things and slowly circle him
in to where i wanted to go…..

‘look kid – we can talk about whatever you want’

Poppy boxes then –

‘poppy boxes?’

Yeah – poppy boxes
people who steal from them should
be
strung up. Put on public
display.’

‘kinda defeats the purpose of honouring our veterans don’t you think’

I dunno
wrong is wrong man

‘wrong is wrong. what if the people that did it,
we sent them to retirement homes so they could sit down
and talk to some lonely veterans needing
someone to come in and cheer them up?’

I guess.

‘you guess.’

Yeah. I guess.
I still think they should
have more happen to them.

‘you ever stolen anything?’

NO

‘ok. what about a friend?
ever have a friend take something they shouldn’t?’

I’m not ratting out anybody man….you don’t do that sort of thing

‘hypothetically then, i’m not looking for names
or to go after any of your buddies
we’re just having a discussion here
about world morals.

Hypothetically…I guess

‘ok then. and have you ever shared in
whatever they’ve stolen
or
passed around the spoils of what they’ve taken?’

Hey man
I’ve never taken nothing that wasn’t mine.
Unless it was a way of sticking it to the MAN
And my buddies…they’ve never done nothin’
….much
unless THEY, were stickin’ it to the
MAN

‘yeah i’ll bet. just buddies taking care of buddies’

Exactly man
it’s like them poppy boxes.

‘how so?’

If the MAN took better care of the veterans
we wouldn’t need to give change to a poppy
box.
Veterans should be better taken care of
in this country….a stupid poppy box
isn’t enough to help them out. The
Man should be doing a better job
of looking out for them.

‘if it’s so stupid and insignificant
then why would you want to string a guy up.
maybe we should look at why he or she
felt the need to take the
box in the first place.’

Exactly man.

-Finally we agreed on something.
his ideology was
skewed but getting him to
see I could view things
from his point of
thinking was
at least building a
bit of trust.

‘so about this other thing….
can
you help me out? Can you
guide me
in the right direction?’
