all that matters is who you’re with

not one bad ham
the sand dunes to the boardwalk
and that protected long grass
‘pay attention to the protected long grass’
and i do as you tell me
12 foot waves slamming down salting maidens
pulling clams
‘don’t say anything more about the clams’
and again – i do as you say
the hot sand the hot boardwalk the hot flip-flops
‘don’t tell me what you saw flipping and flopping’
but i think only now of my hot feet
my sore heels my tired arms
carrying towels and beach chairs and umbrellas
pulling shirt down over growing belly and you say
‘that’s not a bad ham’
and i agree – pulling rock and roll over age
only to realize the level of my
age.
