DON’T BORE ME

don’t be sterile
don’t be generic telling us it’s a new perspective
don’t hunt for the unknown and make believe your lifestyle

stock the shelves
and understand yourself in a carnival
look through each bottle and witness the circus mirrors

tell a joke
be introspective
make the subject most wondrous

but don’t be vulgar

a cigar for a cigarette
a cantaloupe for a pear
an axe for the bow and arrow

chop the hen
that multi purpose layer – directly over the log

but don’t tell me how the blood soaks into the corded years
into the snow – beyond the ground

step backwards as you work
continuously protecting your eyes and hands
that great monster hoping to keep you from a fulfilled Friday

– a mattress needle you must bob and weave
the lumber yard flat bed you must watch in mud
a manager who doesn’t care that you have a show or a reading
tonight…

don’t give me fake news
or alternative facts
but please give me the 6pm lead in
the harmony to go with my China-lead/dollar-store
plate and fork

give me the cold refrigerator with beer
my beer
where the monologue stares from a magnet
saying ‘don’t give the 40 hour work week as an excuse’

write
read
write
read

listen

be interested
don’t be interesting.

don’t bore me

don’t

be

sterile.

ROMAN COWBOYS

I
have the butt cheeks
of a Roman Gladiator
seen
through the eyes
of circus mirrors.

Here I am
10 feet tall –
witness
my smile my
glare of intimidation
through the mouth
of a drive thru
clown.

Cotton Candy

Boys in raised trucks
cowboy boots
with puzzled looks
about work
and saddle cinches
beautiful
pearly button shirts.

Girls
in short pockets
adjusting their jock straps
before walking across the
track ahead of a
horse pull.

I
have bellied up to the
bar
ordered a basket of
fries
asked if Guinness is in a
can
or from the
tap.

My Roman ass
has fought better fights
and tonight
wishes to snuggle
this stool
search the television
for American
politics knowing –
truth is
what we see in ourselves
even

if it’s all
a
lie…..

Pear of the Egg

you ponder the pear
while i think about the egg

poached or sunny?
not boiled

your form cut from the fruit
elbow on knees looking at yourself

that mirrored pear
already looking back at itself knowing-it’s-missing itself

honey

you didn’t answer the first time
which way do you want your egg?

the perfect curve of a circle never ending
but it comes to a smooth point and speeds up

the egg
still in the shell

this passage of time we ponder
you – the pear woman

myself

the egg man
ready for breakfast

*Pear and the Egg: the idea for this piece came from studying the works of Zoltán Glass.

Zoltán Glasswas a Hungarian photographer.  In 1931 he moved to Berlin where he established himself as a photographer, working first as a picture editor of a Berlin evening paper and then, as a photojournalist at the Berliner Tagblatt. In 1936 he was dismissed from the newspaper due to his Jewish ancestry. Later in life Glass had a second career as a fashion and glamour photographer.

Somethin’ Stupid

am i beautiful enough for you
she says
she asks

but she says it
questioningly – demanding an answer.

i am stunned
pulled back

these years my love
i say…still stunned
together…..
where we meld together
a Marc Chagall blue flier over the night

and yet

you’re right

but not how you think.
your question
your demand for an answer –
it weighs on me as well.

no.

your query has never crossed my mind
questioning you
however….
i have questioned myself
wondering if

i’m beautiful enough for you.
am i?

I question
I demand.
